Shortly after taking up wheelchair tennis, Dave discovered that Taunton had its very own wheelchair basketball club, "Somerset Stingers", run by Roger Sleap. The group was originally set up by Barnados and was meeting regularly on Tuesday evenings at Castle Sports Centre, before moving to Wellsprings Leisure Centre when it opened in 2005. Dave very quickly picked up the basic skills and his natural speed made him a fast player, though his shooting ability was lacking. Somerset Stingers only met during school term times (being predominantly a youth group) so at the first summer break Dave went down to Exeter and started training with the "Otters" (formerly Devon Otters).
Otters train in Exeter on Tuesday evenings and run a two hour session, one hour of coaching and then an hour of play. The skill level is very high and the club has a team playing in Division 2 of the national league. Regular training sessions improved Dave's speed and skill level significantly and he was able to take this knowledge and experience back to Stingers.
In 2006 the then committee of Somerset Stingers considered that they'd taken the club as far as they were able. A group of players and coaches were keen to carry on playing basketball in Taunton and so Somerset Wheelchair Sports Club was born, with Dave as the Chairman. The new club aquired the equipment from Stingers and successfully applied for a lottery grant for new equipment. They moved from Wellsprings to the new indoor facility at Taunton Vale Sports Club in November 2008, and meet each week on Tuesday evenings, to school term time.
Dave plays weekly at the club, stepping in as referee and support coach when the need arises.
